Mission Statement

The Writing Center at UDMercy provides a place where writers can talk to other writers about their writing projects. Within the center, students can expect nonjudgmental and helpful comments on their work. Our writing tutors are student "peers" and they are the very best sources for support and guidance on other students' work because, having gone through the English Department Writing Program, they understand the concerns other students have about their writing. Furthermore, these tutors pose non-threatening yet knowledgeable sources of information on individual writing processes, learning styles, and the particulars of "rhetoric" --purpose, context, audience, and style to which all writers must attend.

How the Writing Center Process Works

Students seeking help from their peer tutors find that much of the help they receive arises from conversations that they have with the tutors--questions, answers, problem-posing and solutions, and revision. Students meet one-on-one with their peer tutor and talk and write through their assignments. While our main concern is to assist students in meeting the demands of their assignments, we attempt to foster an engagement with writing that extends beyond a single writing task.

Before coming to the Writing Center, it is wise for students to make an appointment with a tutor. They can do this by calling 313-993-1022. When they arrive their session will be entered into our schedules and if the session goes well, the student may make future appointments with the tutor.

Students may log onto the Writing Center Website to make appointments, find schedules of center and tutor hours.
